Intervention of Mr. Jack Lang on France Info, interview conducted on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 TRIBUTE TO SAMUEL PATY IN THE NAME OF ARAB WORLD INSTITUTE--------------------------------------------------- FRANCE INFO: You were Minister of Education in the early 2000s, today you are President of the Institut du Monde Arabe. How to revalue, re-sacred the function of the teacher? We are not going to go back to the 3rd Republic; how to invent that today?----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JACK LANG: First, I would say that the important thing is that in our society, beyond even teaching, we reverse the order of collective values “‹“‹and that we place intelligence, knowledge and culture at the very heart of our country's ambitions. It shouldn't always be about short-term growth, or the feeling of immediate benefit. It is first of all about the meaning that we must give back to our common adventure. FRANCE INFO: Put teachers back at the heart of society?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JACK LANG: They are already at the heart of society. They are at the forefront, on the front line, they are confronted more than any other profession with violence, inequalities, and they sometimes feel alone. First of all, our teacher training schools are far too theoretical, as I have said often. Future teachers should be allowed to be better prepared. The teaching profession is a real profession which deserves support and preparation. This training must also be provided throughout life. Some teachers themselves take this initiative. Today we are talking about Samuel Paty. Samuel Paty came on his own a few months ago to the Institut du Monde Arabe to follow a day of teacher training. He was passionate about the Arab world, and he had invited animators from the IMA to come to his college to animate an educational concert mixing Arab-Andalusian music from the Maghreb and traditional French music. He was the very example of a teacher open to life, culture and knowledge. FRANCE INFO: This is what everyone who knew Samuel Paty, his former students and his colleagues say. But the problem is perhaps that today, this is left to the initiative of each one?------------------------------------------------------------------------------ JACK LANG: It's also about the means. A few years ago, there were 100,000 educational assistants, young adults to accompany the teachers. I believe that we are currently trying to make up for these delays. Remember that by academy there is a referent for secularism! It is far too little. FRANCE INFO: The teachers say they get no response from this referent when they enter him, since he is alone.-------------- JACK LANG: He's alone, he's alone and he tries to do well regardless. The Head of State will, I hope, announce a series of measures that will allow us to go further. He himself said, and I share this feeling, that the teaching profession is one of the most beautiful professions in the world. It is also necessary, through the status, through salaries, through training, through the support that the institution provides to its teachers, to show that it is not only a declaration of love, which is also important, but that there is also a concrete will. You have to surround the teachers with a real feeling of gratitude, recognition, passion and tenderness. They are the ferment of the Republic. So nothing is more necessary for our country than the support to be given to our teachers.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FRANCE INFO: And that will undoubtedly be the meaning of the tribute this evening. Thank you very much Jack Lang, former Minister of National Education, President of the IMA, for being on France Info . Source: Arab World Institute
