USPA NEWS - The conservative Popular Party won the local and regional elections held this Sunday in Spain. 8,000 city councils and 12 regional parliaments were elected, paying special attention to some regions where the results seemed to point the way to the legislative elections to be held next November. Among them, Madrid, where the candidate of the Popular Party and current president of the regional government, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, achieved an absolute majority; as in the capital, where the current mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, revalidated his mandate.
The conservatives also won elections in Valencia and Aragon, two regions until now governed by the Socialist Party. In Spain as a whole, the conservative Popular Party achieved 23,295 councillors, compared to the 20,711 achieved by the Socialist Party. Participation was 63.92 percent. And Madrid stood out, where the Popular Party achieved 29 councilors, compared to 12 for the extreme left formation Más Madrid; the 11 from the Socialist Party and the 5 obtained by the far-right formation Vox.
In Valencia (east coast of Spain), the Popular Party was also the most thrown, obtaining 13 of the 33 seats at stake, ahead of a regionalist formation with 9 seats, the Socialist Party with 7 and the far-right Vox formation with 4. Also in Zaragoza, the capital of the Aragon region, the conservative Popular Party won the elections with 15 councilors, compared to 10 for the Socialist Party, 4 for the extreme right-wing Vox and 2 for the regionalist ZEC party.
In Andalusia (southern Spain), the Popular Party won the elections held in Seville, with 14 councillors, compared to 12 for the Socialist Party, 3 for Vox and 2 for the regionalist coalition With Andalusia. The conservative party did not achieve its goals in Barcelona, where Trias x Barcelona won 11 councillors, 10 for the Socialist Party of Catalonia and 20 for other formations, including 4 for the Popular Party. Also in the Basque Country, in Bilbao the nationalist party PNV won 12 councillors, compared to the 6 won by the pro-independence party EH-Bildu; the 5 from the Socialist Party, the 4 from the Popular Party and the 2 achieved by another pro-independence formation.
In Galicia, the conservative Popular Party won the elections in A Coruña, where it obtained 12 councillors, compared to the 11 obtained by the Socialist Party and the 4 obtained by the Galician Nationalist Bloc.
Regional elections
In the regional elections, the highlight was the victory of the current president of the regional government of Madrid, representative of the conservative Popular Party, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who obtained 71 deputies compared to 27 for Más Madrid and the Socialist Party, and the 10 obtained by the far-right formation Vox.
Spanish tradition indicates that whoever wins the local and regional elections held a few months before a legislative one, as is the case in this case, will win the legislative elections. If this principle is fulfilled, the conservative Popular Party will regain power in Spain. The pre-campaign for those elections starts this Monday, after the local and regional elections are held. The Government of the socialist Pedro Sánchez has six months ahead to change the trend announced in the elections held this Sunday, where the conservative Popular Party has been the winner.
