British WWII veteran has military medals stolen on D-Day

USPA News - A 92-year-old British World War II veteran was robbed of his military medals on the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings when a man entered his London home after posing as an engineer, police said on Sunday, saying no arrests had been made yet. The incident happened at around 9:25 a.m. local time on Friday when a man knocked on the door of a war veteran`s home in the London Borough of Barnet and claimed to represent a water company.
He told the elderly man he needed to check the water pressure and was then let inside. "The man was allowed in and appeared to look at the taps in the kitchen before leaving a short while later," said a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Service, which is better known as Scotland Yard. "Later on that evening the victim noticed that items in his bedroom had been disturbed and 11 war and service medals had been stolen." Police said only the medals were taken during the distraction burglary, though it remains unclear whether the suspect specifically targeted the war veteran to steal his medals. "The victim served in the Grenadier Guards during the Second World War, serving mainly in Italy and North Africa," the spokesman said. Friday marked the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings that contributed to the Allied victory in World War II. The suspect was described as a white man, approximately 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 meter) tall and of stocky build. He spoke with an Irish accent and wore grey clothing described as the sort an engineer would wear. Police have urged anyone with information to contact authorities.
