Marquis de Lafayette's complete name was Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. In 1777, when he was nineteen-year old, he sailed to America as a volunteer to help the American Independence. He met Washington, they sympathized and Marquis de Lafayette immediately served him faithfully. In 1778, wounded, he returned to France and, during two years, lobbied on behalf of the American cause. In 1780, he went back as American General as well as being under French command serving Louis XVI.
At his arrival in Boston Harbor, Marquis de Lafayette was celebrated with his frigate Hermione. On May 4, 1781, the Frigate Hermione was moved to Philadelphia receiving a visit from the entire Continental Congress. Marquis de Lafayette was moved to Virginia's frontline to fight for the cause. Hermione was used for the blockade in Chesapeake Bay helping to make British surrender. After that, Marquis de Lafayette returned to France and remained an eternal devotee to the United States.
The Hermione Voyage 2015 is part of a larger program with cultural events, exhibitions, and educational programs celebrating the trip and mark its progress. The historic return of the Hermione to the United States lasted from June to July, 2015. The itinery covered the following : Yorktown (VA), Mount Vernon (VA), Alexandria (VA), Annapolis (MD), Baltimore (MD), Philadelphia (PA), New York (NY), Greenport (NY), Newport (RI), Boston (MA), Castine (ME).
